Instructions for obtaining a Marriage License

1.      Before you purchase your Marriage License, an identification waiver is required from the 14th Judicial District Judges Offices, located at 1001 Lakeshore Dr. 3rd floor (across the street).  You will need a state issued ID (drivers licenses) or birth certificate to obtain this waiver.  Their office is closed for lunch, so please visit between the hours of 8:30 am and 12:00 pm or 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 pm.  This waives the law requiring us to keep your birth certificate.

2.       If you have been married before you must know the month, day, and year of the divorce or death of your previous spouse.  NO DOCUMENTS ARE NECESSARY TO SHOW PROOF.

3.       If you are under the age of 18 you must have a certified copy of your birth certificate and both parents must sign a consent form and show their identification.  If one parent has custody, a certified copy of the custody papers must be presented.  If either party is under the age of 16, in addition to parents written consent you must have a court order from the Judge.

4.       The license is good for 30 DAYS. This means the ceremony must be within 30 days of the purchase date of the license.

5.       There is a 3-day waiting period but this can be waived at the Judges office.

6.       If this is a covenant marriage please submit your declaration of intent and affidavit and attestation to be filed in the miscellaneous records before you purchase your license.

7.       The law prohibits the marriage of collaterals within the fourth degree. In other words, we cannot issue a license to a brother or sister, first cousins, uncle and niece, aunt and nephew. Also the law prohibits marriage of persons of the same sex. (L.R.S. TITLE 9, SEC 211 Relations of the fourth degree)

8.       Corrections can only be made before your ceremony.  The fee is $10.00.  No corrections can be made once you are married!

9.       Please note:  If you need a certified copy of your license after the ceremony, you will need to purchase one from this office.  The fee is $6.00.
10.  The marriage ceremony must be performed in the State of Louisiana.
